About Me

General Information About Me and My Life:

For starters, my name is Dana Leigh Currin.  I was born on June 26, 1987, which currently makes me 21 years old.  I was born and raised in the small town of Oxford, North Carolina, which is located about 20 miles North of Raleigh, North Carolina.  I am an only child, so my parents and I have a very close relationship.  My mom is truly my best friend. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her by my side.  I am currently engaged to the most amazing man in the world, named Jeff.  We have known each other for almost 9 years, dated for about 6 months, and have been engaged a little over a year.  We are getting married on June 5, 2010 at The Hudson Manor in Louisburg, North Carolina and the day cannot get here soon enough.  I will then be Mrs. Dana Currin Cortright.

This is my fifth year as an Appalachian State University student, also known as a “5th year senior”.  I have always wanted to teach elementary school, but began having concerns about going into a teaching career.  I began Appalachian as an Exercise Science major, which I quickly found out was not the right choice for me.  Upon realizing this, I talked with my parents about my thoughts and feelings, and made the decision to become a teacher.  Looking back, I realize that a career in teaching is what I wanted all along, and I couldn’t be happier with my decisions. I look so forward to student teaching in the Spring of 2010 and graduating with a degree in Elementary Education in May of 2010.

What I Like:

There are so many things in life that I thourougly enjoy, anywhere from my family, friends,  pets and children to eating watermelon and chocolate covered strawberries outside on a sunny day.

-As I stated earlier, my parents and I have a very close relationship, but that also carries over to other members of my family as well as my close friends.  There is nothing that I like and enjoy more than spending quality with my family and friends.  Each and every one of them hold a special place in my life, for example: my mom is my rock, my dad is my comedian, my grandma is my confidant, my grandpa is who i can always depend on, my aunt is my fashionista, my uncle is who I can complain to when things are going wrong, my cousin is who I can be a big kid around, my fiance is my supporter, and my best friend is my shoulder to cry on.  Of course there are many other people in my life that I love and cherish, but these people are the ones that make my life a little easier and a lot happier.

-I am also passionate about animals.  Considering I grew up living on a farm, it’s pretty apparent that I adore all kinds of animals.  My family and I have 3 rescue dogs (a Dalmation named Purdy, a mixed breed named Lucy, and some type of “hunting dog” named Peppy), 2 inside small dogs (a Shihtzu named Chance, and a Chihuahua named Lola), a guinea pig (named Cozmo), about 50 cows, 20 goats, and 3 donkeys.  Coming home to these animals each day just make my days so much better.  It is such a pleasure to be able to experience such unconditional love from such sweet creatures.  Currently, my fiance and I have our own dog, a miniature Yorkie named Ace.  He is truly our pride and joy, and because we do not have children yet, he is like our child.

-Another interest of mine, just in case it isn’t obvious being that I’m an elementary education major, is young children.  I belive that children are fascinating and they never cease to amaze me.  You can always count on them to tell you what they are thinking or what is on their mind, as well as to give you so much love.  They are intriguing people, and they know a lot more than they are thought to know.  I consider teaching children to be a gift, not a burden and cannot wait to have a class of my own in future years to come.

-One last thing that I stronly enjoy is eating watermelon and chocolate covered strawberries.  They are my absolute favorite foods in the world, and I would eat them everyday if I could.  Often, I eat so much or so many, I make myself feel sick.  Its may seem a little ridiculous or even funny, but eating these things is something that I really like to do.  A lot of times, they can make me happy when I’m having a very bad day.  Anyone who knows me well, knows that I eat these whenever possible and that I can eat lots of it.

What I Dislike:

Some of the things that I dislike include when people use other people, the feeling of being completely stressed and anxious, going to the dentist, and thunderstorms.

-Being such a “pushover” or a person that finds it impossible to say “no”, I strongly dislike it when people use other people or take them for granted.  Many times in my life, I have experienced being used or taken advantage of, whether it was loaning peole money who never paid me back or doing favors for people who were very unappreciative.  I’m the type of person who doesn’t mind helping others out when they need it, but I do like to be appreciated and/or acknowledged for what I do.  A simple “thank you” or “I appreicate it” is all that is needed, but that is often very difficult to find in today’s world.  I consider myself to be a very appreciative and thankful person, and find it difficult to deal with those who aren’t.

-In my opinion, having the feeling of being stressed or anxious is one of the worst feelings in the world.  It gives me a sense of being overwhelmed and finding it impossible to get everything done.  In some of these instances, I find myself being physically effected when it comes to stress.  For example, I often get headaches, stomach aches, and breakouts.  I have found ways to cope and deal with stress, but still find it inevitable to always avoid.

Stressed Out

Stressed Out (I got this Clipart Image from http://theinsanityofthesane.files.wordpress.com/2007/11/944-001stressed-out-posters.jpg)

-As many people do, I dislike going to the dentist.  Most of the time, my phobia is unrealistic or unnecessary because the appointment goes just fine, but it’s just the thought of going that scares me.  Trips to the dentist help contribut to my feeling of anxiety and stress, which I previously mentioned.  I typically try to avoid the dentist, but sometimes it just can’t be avoided.  After going, I always say to myself, “That wasn’t so bad”, but still find it to be something I really dislike.

-Thunderstorms, which rarely occur in Boone, but often occur in my hometown, also trigger my anxiety and stress levels, which causes me to dislike them.  During thunderstorms I tend to get nervous and timid.  Many years ago, a horrible thunderstorm occured in my hometown, which produced tornadoes near and around my house.  Since that day, I have always feared thunderstorms and the consequences they may bring with them.

 What I Look Like:

I am a 21 year old female with straight, dirty blone hair (naturally brown hair, but with blonde highlights) that is about shoulder length.  I am 5 feet 3 inches tall and have hazel, a combination of emerald green and chocolate brown, eyes.  I have often been told that I have a small nose and small ears with chubby cheeks.  My skin is fair-colered and  tans easily when out in the sun.  I am the spitting image of my mother, with a few features that resemble my father.  I wear a size 7 1/2 in shoes and a size 6 in rings.  You will typically see me wearing cute tops, jeans, and my very comfortable and worn in Rainbows.  I take pride in my apperance, and have even been told that I have a “teacher look” about me.

How I Act (Personality):

Depending on who I am around helps to determine my personality.  I can be as quiet as a scurrying mouse, or as loud as a growling bear.  When around my closest family and friends, I am often talkative because I have lots to say, humourous because I have a great sense of humor, nurturing just as my mom is, and caring because I simply care.  I have an awesome listening ear, and consider myself to be easy to talk to.  I gives tons of support to my family and friends, and receive it in return.  When around people that I don’t know very well, or even in a large group of people, I tend to shy away from talking a lot or being the center of attention; the only time being infront of a group of people doesn’t bother me is when children are involved, which is a good thing considering I’m going to be a teacher.  I can be very nervous and anxious when it comes to unknown situations, excited when it comes to something I cherish, opinionated when it comes to something I strongly believe in, indecisive when it comes to making major decisions and tender-hearted when it comes to something that effects me and the people that I love most.  I am considered by most to be an organization freak, but being organized helps to get me far in life.  I have the tendency to have a hard time trusting just anyone, you have to work to earn my trust.  Most of all, I’m an all around straight forwad, pleasant, and lovable person, what you see is what you get. I live my life with loads of ethics, integrity and many values.

What a cute page! I really like all the pictures you incorporated with your what you wrote. It kept the page interesting and made me want to read more! I agree, being stressed is one of the worst feelings in the world! Life shouldn’t be like that, but unfortunately, sometimes it is. I love how you told your ring size in your looks section…must have something to do with a wedding coming up! ;) Well, thanks for being such a great friend!

Well Dana today I was in the library and it came to my attention that we are nearing the end of my semester and I do not even know my classmates outside of the daily routine within the class. I decided to read some blogs. I have always wanted to live on a farm. We have had every animal a farm would have without the space to keep them for any amount of time. You are very lucky to have been raised in that kind of environment. As I was reading your page I found myself relating you most to my sister. She tends to be in the background but get to know her and she can talk your ear off. She is very sweet and is willing to help anyone that she cares about which seems to be the same case with you. Anyways hope the rest of the semester goes well for you.
